The plugin includes an animated rain radar.
Features include:
- Radar map centered on the selected location
- OpenStreetMap base map
- RainViewer radar data
- Multiple historical radar frames
- Radar animation
- Pause/play control

The radar uses the coordinates stored for a saved location.
### Location management
You can maintain a list of saved locations.
Available actions:
- Add a city
- Search for cities online
- Select a matching city from search results
- Store the city together with its location coordinates
- Open weather information for a saved city
- Remove a saved city
- Open the rain radar for the selected city
City search supports country selection when a country code is supplied.
When a city is selected, it is also stored as the last-used location so the plugin can restore it later.
### Compare two locations
TheWeather includes a dedicated comparison screen for two saved locations.
The comparison can show:
- Location name
- Current temperature
- Minimum/maximum temperature
- Weather condition
- Weather icon
- Feels-like temperature

The second location can be changed with the **YELLOW** key on the comparison screen.
## ⚙️ Settings
Open the **TheWeather Settings** screen to configure the following options.
### Wind speed
Choose the unit used for wind speed:
- `km/h`
- `m/s`
The displayed wind speed also includes the Beaufort scale where applicable.
### Date format
Choose between:
- `DD/MM/YYYY`
- `DD.MM.YYYY`
The selected format is applied to the plugin screens and radar display.
### Radar default zoom
The default radar zoom can be selected from:

The selected value is used when opening the radar for a saved location.
## 🎨 Appearance
The appearance/info screen provides additional customization options.
### Temperature overlay
The plugin can display the current temperature as an overlay.
Press **OK** on the appearance screen to toggle the overlay:
- `ON`
- `OFF`
The overlay is saved and restored between plugin sessions.
The overlay is designed to appear while watching live TV or when the relevant weather information screen is active.
### Icon packs
Two icon packs are available:
- **Standard Icons**
- **Extra Icons**
Changing the icon pack automatically restarts the plugin so the new graphics are loaded.
### 🏞️ Backgrounds
The built-in background picker allows you to select a background from the plugin's background directory.
Supported image formats include:
- `.jpg`
- `.jpeg`
- `.png`
- `.bmp`
The picker provides a preview of the available background images.

## Weather alerts
The plugin contains local weather alert logic based on wind, precipitation, and feels-like temperature.
Current thresholds include:
| Condition | Threshold | Alert |
|---|---:|---|
| Strong wind | Beaufort 7+ | Strong wind |
| Heavy storm | Beaufort 9+ | Heavy storm |
| Heavy rain | 15 mm+ | Heavy rain |
| Very heavy rain | 30 mm+ | Very heavy rain |
| Warm weather | 30°C+ | Warm weather |
| Extreme heat | 35°C+ | Extreme heat |
| Severe cold | -8°C or below | Severe cold |
| Extreme cold | -15°C or below | Extreme cold |
If several conditions are active, the highest-priority alert is displayed.
Alert colors are used to distinguish the severity, including red, orange, and blue warning states.
## Data sources and networking
The plugin retrieves weather and location data from Buienradar services.
It uses:
- Buienradar location search
- Buienradar forecast data
- RainViewer radar metadata and radar tiles
- OpenStreetMap map tiles for the radar base map
The plugin performs an internet connectivity check using the Buienradar location service.
### 💾 Caching
Weather data is cached for **5 minutes** to reduce unnecessary network requests.
### Timeouts
Network requests use explicit timeouts to avoid blocking the Enigma2 interface for an unlimited amount of time.
Radar downloads are handled in a background thread and the results are processed back on the Enigma2 side.
## Configuration files
The plugin stores its configuration under:
```text
/etc/enigma2/TheWeather/
```
Relevant configuration files include:
```text
TheWeather.cfg
TheWeather_last.cfg
TheWeather_overlay.cfg
TheWeather_bg.cfg
iconpack.cfg
```
These files are used for saved locations, the last selected location, overlay state, background selection, and icon-pack selection.
## Display compatibility
The plugin contains separate layouts for:
- HD / 1920×1080
- SD / 1280×720
The interface automatically selects the appropriate layout based on the detected display width.
## 🌍 Localization
The plugin uses gettext translations and a dedicated `TheWeather` translation domain.
The plugin reads the Enigma2 system language and loads translations from:
```text
/usr/lib/enigma2/python/Plugins/Extensions/TheWeather/locale/
```
## Technical highlights
The current implementation includes:
- Python 2/3 compatibility handling
- HTTP timeout and response cleanup
- Five-minute weather caching
- Improved city/ID lookup
- Special-character handling in city names
- Internet connectivity checks
- Background radar network requests
- Controlled processing on the Enigma2 main thread
- Radar timer cleanup
- Validation for invalid hour values
- Sunrise/sunset handling
- Automatic SD/HD skin selection
- Safe cleanup of timers and image-loading resources
## 📋 Requirements
The plugin is designed for **Enigma2** receivers and depends on the Enigma2 Python environment and its standard UI components.
An active internet connection is required for:
- City search
- Weather data
- Rain radar
- Weather refreshes
## 📦 Installation
Install the plugin using your preferred Enigma2 package/install method.
The plugin directory is expected at:
```text
/usr/lib/enigma2/python/Plugins/Extensions/TheWeather/
```
After installation, launch **TheWeather** from the Enigma2 plugin menu.
## Quick start
1. Open **TheWeather**.
2. Open the location screen.
3. Press **GREEN** to add a city.
4. Enter the city name.
5. Select the correct search result.
6. Press **OK** to load its weather information.
7. Use **YELLOW** for RainRadar.
8. Use **GREEN** on the weather screen to change the hour interval.
9. Use **BLUE** to compare two saved cities.
10. Open **TheWeather Settings** to configure wind units, date format, and radar zoom.
11. Open the appearance screen to enable the temperature overlay, change the icon pack, or select a background.
## 📝 Notes
- RainRadar requires saved location coordinates. If a saved city does not contain usable coordinates, remove and add the city again to enable radar for that location.
- Changing the icon pack triggers a plugin restart.
- Weather information depends on the availability and response of the configured online services.
