FIFA: World Cup will be in 4K, and 8K
    By Chris Forrester

Football’s governing body FIFA says its upcoming World Cup tournament from Brazil will be carried by some broadcasters in 4K. Niclas Ericson, head of FIFA’s TV Division, speaking at MIPTV in Cannes, said FIFA was working 24/7 to capture the event, not only in HDTV, but also in 4K and even 8K.

“We are working hard to finalise all the broadcasting arrangements, and I have to say that some contracts are not quite in place for certain aspects, but last week we confirmed that some of the matches will be in 4K. Football and the TV industry have worked hand in hand over the years, and fans now expect the very best from us,” he said. “Developments like the introduction of colour TV, and then HDTV, have been helped by our tournament.”

“In 2010, together with Sony, we brought 3D coverage to the world. Sony is our marketing partner, and to be clear, the business we do on the actual broadcasts is not part of the core agreement, but we are so happy to be able to work with Sony to stay in front of developments when it comes to coverage of our sport and to make sure that the games are projected around the world in the best state possible.”

Ericson explained that the Confederations Cup (in Brazil, June 2013) was something of a ‘dummy run’ at what might be included in the actual World Cup games. “The results were very promising, helped by shipping a truck from Europe (by Telegenic), and this helped us decide in favour of 4K for this June’s World Cup.”

Ericson showed the extremely challenging camera plans for the matches, and when 4K (and 8K) is included it means that some grounds would be hosting more than 60 cameras. “There are gaps in our 4K camera plan, but we are now working hard to see how some cameras can double as both 4K and HDTV units, and adapting their lenses to suit.”

Ericson said that three matches at the Maracana (Rio de Janeiro) stadium would be covered in 4K. Games 50, 58 and 64 (the final) would be televised. “These are three very key matches, but in any case it is made easier for us because the Maracana stadium is very large and where we have our FIFA headquarters for the whole series of games and where the broadcasting centre is based. The coverage is more than just the soccer and requires us to create special graphics, commentators, and a dedicated production team.”

“With NHK of Japan we are also working on 8K production. This will include a few matches but is a very different arrangement, with a handful of cameras – only a few exist. But it does mean that we can down-convert the 8K camera work to 4K, and make those images available for the 4K productions,” he added.

“We have had lots of discussions with our broadcasting clients, and looking at whether we can put the 4K signals onto a ‘world feed’ and if we were to do this who might take the signals, and what would we need in terms of fibre and satellite capacity to do this.”

Ericson explained that FIFA was still exploring how this might be achieved technically, and in the most cost-effective way which would enable broadcasters “if they wished, to take the material. Needless to say there are many Asian broadcasters willing to do this. It will be interesting for us to see how this works out, and discussions are taking place now to see how much interest there is. As well as this we will be making delayed images available should they wish to have them, and we will produce two movies of the events.

FIFA had structured the TV rights in such a way so as to make it as easy as possible for would-be 4K broadcasters to take the matches. If they want to cover the games then it is not about rights but simply about the technical aspects. “We are in discussions now with potential carriers of what we describe as a ‘world feed’ [in 4K] and we recognise that the industry is also struggling with whether to handle 30 fps or 60 fps, but we want to do the very best we can. We hope that there will be a few Asian broadcasters, and then in the Middle East as well as Europe, will take the 4K feed, as well as Globo in Brazil, and perhaps some cinema exhibition around the world.”

HISPASAT will broadcast the 2014 World Cup to Europe and America

The satellite operator signed an agreement with Overon to provide TV signal distribution services from its Amazonas 1 satellite.
HISPASAT, Spain's satellite communications operator, signed a capacity leasing agreement with Overon, a leader in the dissemination of audiovisual content, to broadcast the 2104 20th World Cup to be held in Brazil from June 12-July 13.
This stellar sporting event will be telecast across Europe and America via the HISPASAT Group's Amazonas 1 satellite, which will provide TV channel services transmitting the World Cup games. Thanks to its coverage of both continents, this satellite is the ideal vehicle for this type of event, and owing to its cutting-edge benefits and flexibility, it now offers very reliable links and connections to both sides of the Atlantic. The agreement provides to Overon 8 Amazonas 1 satellite transponders, connecting Brazil-Brazil, Brazil-South America, Brazil-Europe, and Brazil-North America, that will be devoted to telecasting this sporting event.
By virtue of this agreement, some of the leading TV channels worldwide such as Fox Sports and Al Jazeera will cover the 2104 20th World Cup through HISPASAT.
Ignacio Sanchis, HISPASAT'S Business Director, stated that “this agreement bolsters HISPASAT's close commercial ties with Overon. We are extremely pleased that such a prestigious broadcasting company has chosen HISPASAT to work on this major project – televising the Brazilian World Cup".
The CEO of Overon America, Óscar López, stated that “after many years of working on joint projects at European 30º West position, namely permanent and occasional TV distribution services, this is the first major deal with Overon on the other side of the Atlantic. We trust that this will be the start of many trans-Atlantic collaborations in the future”.
The agreement consolidated HISPASAT's leading position in providing broadcast, distribution and contribution video services to Latin America through different orbital positions and satellites, placing the Group at the top of transatlantic satellite providers.

    Digitürk sale draws nearer

    April 14, 2014 08.04 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Turkey’s Cukurova Holding is in direct talks with a couple of companies, one of which is foreign, to sell the pay-TV platform Digitürk.

However, quoted by Hurriyet, Sakir Ercan Gül, the head of the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF), added that should these talks fail a tender process would be held.

Gül added that the TMSF, which seized control of Digitürk in May last year due to Cukurova Holdings’ financial difficulties, was itself not involved in the negotiations.

Cukurova Holding currently owns 53% of Digitürk, with the remaining stake being held by Providence Equity Partners.

Interest in Digitürk has already been shown by a number companies including its main competitor D-smart and Türk Telekom.

Canal+ will meanwhile show Wednesday night games, including those involving PSG.

    Nervous times for BSkyB

Last Friday saw a 10.5p (1.1 per cent) fall in BSkyB’s share price and continued the tumble over the past few weeks that has seen shareholder confidence ebb away. The recent falls, from £9.46 to £8.77 on anxieties over the likely price of the next auction round of English Premier League football costs, and last week’s news that BT Sport has won a 50 per cent slice of broadcasting rights for 4 years of new rugby coverage (European Rugby Champions Cup and the European Rugby Challenge Cup competitions).

BT and BSkyB will share the matches equally. Pool matches will be split 50/50, and both broadcasters will show two quarter finals, one semi-final and the final would be broadcast by both.

Analysts at bankers Espirito Santo, while describing the end result as being “pragmatic” added: “We continue to assume significant cost inflation for programming,” due to “uncertainty around bidding competition for football rights”. Meanwhile Barclays forecast a slowdown in Sky’s third-quarter revenues, adding: “We feel that the investment case is again hard to make.”

Morgan Stanley, in its note to clients, recognises that BSkyB’s own assessment of current trading conditions remains “challenging”, but the bank’s view is broadly in favour of Sky’s move to a broader portfolio of services. “Sky’s marketing in Q3 was focused on non traditional entertainment services such as box sets and theSky Store rather than on traditional TV subscription marketing. It was also a relatively light quarter for the marketing of broadband. This contrasted with a relatively heavy promotional quarter from BT (which for much of the period had a free DSL broadband for six months plus £100 supermarket voucher offer). There were also fibre promotions from BT and Virgin in the quarter,” stated the bank.

Morgan Stanley expects 70,000 new broadband additions for Q3, about 30,000 for DTH, around 105,000 extra HD subs, and an unchanged ARPU picture at some £571 (£567 same period last year).

BSkyB’s results are due on May 1st.

Al Jazeera US quits sports coverage
    By Chris Forrester

Qatar-backed Al Jazeera America has closed its sports unit and laid off “a few dozen” freelancers who were hired last summer ahead of the channel’s launch last summer. Full time staffers are also affected and reports suggest that the channel’s sports coverage was surplus to requirements.

The same argument applies to its on-screen social media coverage. The Stream, which had been a nightly show (at 7.30pm EST) but which will now be reduced to a weekly show. The Stream is transmitted from Washington’s Newseum facility.

Al Jazeera America launched last August having taken over the assets of Current TV. Sister channel beIN Sports has been present in the US since 2012. When Al Jazeera America launched, it hired around 400 new staff as well as absorbing most of the Current TV employees.

    Russian pay-TV: surprising new trends

    April 21, 2014 08.01 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

MTS bucked the trend in Russia’s pay-TV market in 2013, losing subscribers while all its competitors added to their customer base.

Data produced by iKS Consulting and published by Kommersant shows that MTS ended 2013 with 2.58 million pay-TV subscribers, down by 12% on the 2.94 million total a year earlier.

MTS puts this loss down to the digitisation of its networks in the regions.

However, iKS Consulting also says that MTS is moving faster than the competition in moving from analogue to digital in order to attract more high-paying customers.

What is more, MTS’ digital subscriber total more than tripled to over 600,000 in 2013 and it now accounts for a quarter of the pay-TV total, which is the highest in the industry.

By comparison, ER Telecom’s digital TV subscribers account for only some 15% of total pay-TV customers.

These changes at MTS mean that it will have lost its status as one of the top three providers of pay-TV services in Russia as of Q1 this year, being overtaken by ER Telekom.

Although MTS earned more revenues than ER Telekom in 2103, it is likely to be overtaken by the cable operator by the end of this year.

Looking at the pay-TV market as a whole in Russia, iKS Consulting says that it grew by 16% in 2013 to R54 billion (€1.09 billion).

At the same time, the number of subscribers increased by 11% to 34.6 million.

However, while revenues are projected to rise to R59 billion this year, grow is likely to fall by six percentage points as providers find it increasingly difficult to attract customers.

The DTH platform Orion Express was one of the big success stories on 2013, increasing its subscribers base from 1.05 million to 1.98 million by reducing its subscription fee to the level charged by its competitor and market leader Tricolor TV.

Sky premiums to run on Virgin TV Anywhere

    May 12, 2014 11.11 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Sky Premium channels Sky Movies and Sky Sports will be added to Virgin Media’s TV Anywhere service as part of a major five-year agreement.

In addition to its current portfolio of Sky channels, Virgin Media will also offer its TV customers Sky Sports 3 HD, Sky Sports 4 HD, and Sky Sports F1 HD, with Sky Sports News HD and Sky News HD to follow.

Under the terms of the new agreement, Virgin TV customers will be able to access their Sky entertainment channels on multiple devices, including computers, and for the first time, selected tablets and mobiles, via the Virgin TV Anywhere app. From the summer, those TV customers with subscriptions to Sky Movies and Sky Sports will also be able to access live and on demand content on the go through Sky Sports and Sky Movies apps.

Jeremy Darroch, chief executive, Sky, commented: “We’re pleased to have extended our partnership with Virgin Media, which increases the reach of our content and reinforces our broadly-based approach to growth. This agreement builds on our long-standing relationship with Virgin Media, enabling us to deliver our great channels to even more homes across the UK and opening up additional sources of revenue.”

Tom Mockridge, Virgin Media’s chief executive officer, added: “We are excited our customers will be able to watch even more great TV from Sky on more devices as a result of the most extensive agreement ever signed between Virgin Media and Sky. This promises to be a fantastic summer of entertainment and our customers, whether at home or on the go, will get to enjoy Sky’s range of channels for years to come as a result of our investment.”

However, there is no mention of Sky Atlantic, which remains absent from the Virgin line-up.

DTT dispute flares up in Poland

    May 12, 2014 11.39 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The Polish national transmission company Emitel has threatened to take legal action over the delay for a tender for what will be the country’s eighth DTT multiplex.

According to Satkurier and Gazeta Prawna, the closing date for a competition cannot by law be any later than eight months after the receipt of a request for a reservation of frequencies in the 174-230 MHz band.

This would require a competition to be completed by the end of June, the request having been submitted in October last year.

However, the regulators KRRiT and UKE are now saying the deadline may not be met, with the competition instead taking place this autumn or even later.

Industry experts point out that the new multiplex could carry up to eight new TV channels and could have a detrimental effect on cable and DTH services.

This, in their view, may explain why regulators are in no hurry to hold a tender for the multiplex.
